Rotarians Organise the First Rotary North London DisAbility Games

Spurred on by the success of the London Paralympic Games, Rotary clubs in North London organised the first Rotary North London DisAbility Games on Sunday 14 October 2012 at the Aspire National Training Centre, Wood Lane, Stanmore HA7 4AP.

The games gave participants a chance to take part, possibly for the first time, in such indoor activities as Boccia, Bowls, Table Tennis, Darts, Wheelchair Slalom and New Age Kurling as well as swimming in the disability friendly pool. Participants came from Disabled Clubs in Harrow, St Albans, Edgware, Slough and Aylesbury and all were very pleased to take part. Medals were presented to the first 3 in each event.

The Rotary Club of Barnet is one of the sponsors of the DisAbility Games and club President  Saiful Shamsad said ‘Like most projects in Rotary this was started by one Rotarian, in this case  Scott Maclachlan a member of our Club, who taking inspiration from the Paralympic Games, which were founded by the late Rotarian Sir Ludwig Guttman, wanted to give disabled members of our community the chance to take part in a sporting activity.

At least eighty participants attended, ably assisted by members of nine North London Rotary clubs including Northwick Park and Golders Green.

Rotary is for communities

Many members say they join Rotary because it gives them a chance to give something back to their community. Each club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects both at home and abroad. Members also volunteer their time, organising community events, running projects to promote the achievements of young people and coordinating educational programmes.
